AAA wants you to stay safe in the car. Remember to always buckle up!

Since the campaign's launch in 2002, AAA clubs across the country have worked to enact stronger child restraint laws in 47 states and the District of Columbia. AAA has also been active at the national level and in local communities promoting child passenger safety.

State Laws
All 50 states and the District of Columbia have laws that require the use of child safety seats; however, many gaps and inconsistencies exist. While it is important to know your state law, it is more important to use best practice when looking to properly restrain your child in a vehicle. In many states the law does not mirror the recommended best practices for maximum protection for your child.

AAA.com/SafeSeats4Kids is designed to help kids stay safe in the car as well as have fun with games and activities. Proper child seat safety - including correct car safety seat installation and usage - is vitally important in keeping kids safe in vehicle crashes. Child passenger safety is one of AAA's primary public affairs initiatives.

The Problem

In today's highly mobile society, children travel more than ever. Sadly, this mobility comes at a staggering price. Each year, an average of 1,500 kids die and 175,000 are injured in car crashes - enough to rank motor vehicle crashes as a leading cause of death for children in the U.S. Tragically, many of these deaths could have been prevented. Research shows that seat belts and safety seats - when properly used -are the most effective tools in preventing injuries and deaths in vehicle crashes.

AAA's Commitment

For more than a century, AAA has worked to foster a safe environment for travelers through education, research and advocacy. Since its founding, AAA has been a leader in developing and supporting educational and safety programs for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and children. So it's appropriate that AAA enters its second century of public service by focusing on the nation's most precious commodity: our children.

In 2002, AAA launched a campaign called Seated, Safe and Secure, to raise awareness of child passenger safety (CPS) and strengthen occupant protection laws for everyone under the age of 18. AAA believes that closing the loopholes in existing state laws and educating the public about the proper use of safety seats and restraints for all children are essential to preventing child passenger injuries and deaths. Studies have shown that neither of these "fixes," when used independently of the other is as successful as a combination of the two.

Crashes can happen anywhere! You should always wear your safety belt even if you are just traveling a few feet. The booster seat helps your safety belt fit the way it should. The back seat is the safest place for all kids under 13. Wearing your safety belt is the best way to stay safe in a vehicle. If you are under 4 feet 9 inches, a booster seat helps you sit up higher and see more.
